Idriss Azougaye Contemporary Arabic Calligraphy & Islamic Art
Contemporary Arabic Calligraphy & Islamic Art from Hamburg
Moin and Salam,
my name is Idriss Azougaye – I am a contemporary Arabic calligraphy artist, designer, and art director based in Hamburg, Germany. Born into a German-Moroccan family of artists, my work is deeply rooted in Islamic art, Arabic typography, and traditional Moorish craftsmanship, while consciously engaging with contemporary visual culture.
Growing up within a lineage of renowned calligraphers and artisans, Arabic calligraphy was never merely an aesthetic for me, but a language of meaning, resistance, and reflection.
Arabic Calligraphy as Contemporary ExpressionAt the core of my artistic practice lies Arabic calligraphy and Islamic visual culture, which I use as tools to engage with urgent global and social questions such as climate change, oppression, identity, and injustice. My works translate classical calligraphic traditions into modern, conceptual compositions, often reinterpreting well-known artworks through the lens of Arabic script.
This approach allows me to bridge historical Islamic art forms with contemporary narratives, creating works that speak across cultures, geographies, and generations.
From Islamic Art to Spatial DesignA significant part of my work focuses on calligraphy for mosque interiors and sacred spaces in Germany. I have contributed to the artistic design of over 15 mosque projects, including Arabic calligraphy, stucco work, and Zellij-inspired elements – often in close collaboration with my father.
My aim is not to replicate historical ornamentation, but to develop a contemporary visual language for Islamic spaces, grounded in tradition yet relevant to the present.
Design, Editorial Work & International ProjectsI hold a degree in Communication Design and have worked internationally as an Art Director and designer, collaborating with magazines and institutions such as ELLE, L’Officiel, OK! Magazine Germany, and other global publications. This editorial background strongly informs my sense of typography, composition, and narrative depth.
I am also the Editor-in-Chief and founder of YOUNUS Magazine, Germany’s first art and culture magazine focusing on Muslim life and contemporary creative practices.
Workshops, Exhibitions & Artistic ExchangeAlongside my studio practice, I regularly lead Arabic calligraphy workshops at universities, museums, and cultural institutions across Germany and abroad. My work has been exhibited internationally, with ongoing and upcoming projects in Germany, Istanbul, Córdoba, Madrid, and Ghent.
I am passionate about education, mentorship, and cultural exchange, and actively support young Muslim artists through collaborative networks and platforms.
Artistic PhilosophyMy work stands for depth over decoration, for craftsmanship, meaning, and responsibility. I create art for individuals and institutions seeking authentic Islamic art, contemporary Arabic calligraphy, and thoughtful spatial design beyond clichés and ornament.
